| In case there's anyone who reads this that doesn't keep up with facebook...
I just wanted to let you all know that my host family from Switzerland is looking for a new au pair for this year. If you or anyone you know might be interested, it's a fantastic opportunity to live in Europe, gain some independence, and learn about family life in a new setting. Young women (or men!) in the college age range would be great candidates for this. Let me know if you want more information!

| I went to apply for a marriage license earlier this week. Part of the deal was that while the lady was back typing stuff into the form, I was supposed to read the handout she gave me containing the marriage laws of the state of Michigan. This was my favorite law of the bunch (yes, I even wrote it down):
"SEC. 6. No insane person, idiot, or person who has been afflicted with
syphilis or gonorrhea and has not been cured of the same, shall be
capable of contracting marriage."
Don't worry, I made sure to call Matt when I was done to let him know that I had sworn (with my right hand raised and everything) that he was not, in fact, an idiot.

| Well, folks- it's over. The first year is done!
I was supposed to have jury duty today. I postponed the date and everything so that I wouldn't have to miss school. I entered grades, packed up my classroom, and turned in my keys on Friday because I knew I would have to call in "sick" today to report to court. (I was supposed to go in to school for a teacher work day) I just found my summons this morning and called in to make sure I was scheduled to report.
My number is not needed.
That was very anti-climactic. I pretty much rearranged my life to make this happen today, stayed up late last night trying to find the court summons and the sub line to call in sick (unsuccessful on both counts, btw), and probably made mistakes in my hasty grading and cleaning up on Friday. But if I were to go in today, there would certainly not be six hours of work for me to do. Oh well.
I'm on summer vacation.

| It's been a while, eh? I should update you, oh world of xanga, on the status of my classroom pets, I suppose. Far from dying as I had supposed the roaches to be doing, they are quite alive and are once again three in number. Renegade Roach #3 had been hiding out in my desk drawer (that I open all the time) for the last two months! My classroom is now also home to a rainbow leech, as well as a cup full of dirt and worms to feed the thing. (Thanks, Tasha) We've been dissecting rats for the last few weeks, which is always an adventure. Most amusing to me is how squeamish the guys get when they have to dissect the testicles. The girls never seem to care, but the guys look like they're about to throw up. Haha. The rest of the school continues to be a circus. In a figurative sense, as we deal with budget cuts and impossible standards set by the state and an administration that can't seem to communicate with anyone, etc. etc. But also in a literal sense: there is a carnival in the front parking lot, right outside my window. You should all go. Ride on the ferris wheel and earn money for my classroom. Yay!
Since today's the 50 Day mark, I guess it's been 50 days since I last posted. A more encouraging number is 15- the number of school days left. Wonderful. I am so excited for summer- you have no idea.
